The Top Green-Tech Breakthroughs of 2008

WIRED is a great blog, and they have a list of top ten clean breakthroughs for 2008. It’s an excellent list. I think they forgot one very, very important one – Gas going to $4/gallon. Of course, it also went back down, but for that period, everyone was interested in clean tech, [...]

Tax breaks for Bike commuters. But why pay the company, not the cyclist?

Good – Tax breaks for people who bike to work.
Silly/Moronic – The tax break goes to the company. The company decides if and how to pass it on.
I suppose the idea is that with the tax break, companies will be incentivized to provide better facilities or other benefits to bike commuters, but there is no [...]

2009 Audi TT 2.0 TDI – 45 MPG in a sports car. Pretty Sweet.

I’ve always thought the Audi TT was good looking car, and since sports cars tend to favor low weight, and low weight is good for fuel efficiency, it makes some sense to combine the two. If you rarely use a big car or luggage space, or as a second car, why not get a [...]

The Miniature High-efficiency Motorhome

As a kayaker and climber, I often find myself sleeping in the back of my car on weekend trips. No need for a big RV, but a simple, small camper would be neat. In Europe, these things exist, and I like them a lot. RomaHome has just announced a new [...]

Bicycles made from Bamboo

A Nevada bike maker is working on building bikes made with Bamboo frames.
I want one.  Bamboo is one of the more sustainable materials out there.    Bicycles are very low impact.  Combine the two, and it’s a winner of an idea.

Which is better? Electric, plug-in, conventional?

Cool article, attempting to answer the question:
“ If the electricity used to charge up an electric car is created by burning fossil fuels, is it better to stick with a gas-powered car with good fuel economy?”

Sails to improve efficiency in Ships

I think I competed against these guys in the California Clean Tech Open.  Clearly they are doing well!
http://www.ecogeek.org/content/view/2015/
As a long time sailor, I find this really a cool idea.   But if kites are 5 times more effiecient than sails, why don’t we see them on recreational sail boats?   Can a boat like this tack, or [...]

Gasoline from Algae

Brilliant. Instead of changing infrastructure to accommodate ethanol or bio-diesel, why not change the fuel?
Sapphire Energy plans to use Algae to produce Gasoline.
Simple, and smart. These are the kind of things that could really be game changing.

Cargo bikes are cool.

When I was in Peru last year, we saw tons of these cool cargo bikes.
If I could have shipped one home, I would have. Seeing the prices of these, I wish I had ordered one. Super cool though. Treehugger has a review of several high end cargo bikes here.

30 electric cars available now or soon…

I was talking about electric cars just yesterday. They still have many limitations, cost, range and charging times. But they are getting close. I could see my wife and I sharing an electric car and a conventional car or hybrid. Use the electric for much of the day to day stuff, [...]
